In 1340, the Netherlands' oldest brewery opened its doors in beautiful Wijlre, Limburg. The brewery had direct access to its own water source. This was a great advantage, as it allowed the growing demand for beer to be met effectively. Around this time, an exclusive right applied to the brewing and selling of beer in and around Wijlre: the banpanhuisrecht. When Napoleon put an end to this exclusive right, Frederik Edmond Brand purchased the banpanhuis in 1871. Since then, it has been the Brand Brewery.
Brand has been brewing wonderful beers from the very beginning. In addition to lager, the brewery also offered specialty beers after the Second World War. This makes the Imperator the oldest specialty beer in the Netherlands, soon followed by UP and Dubbelbock. The fruity Lentebock and the refreshing Brand Weizen followed.
At Brand, innovation and brewing new beers are always central. For instance, between 2012 and 2019, we organized the Brand Beer Brewing Competition, where we asked home brewers to share their feel for beer and their craftsmanship with us. And in 2022, we launched the Collab Series, where Brewmasters Rob Habets from Brand and Peter Rouwen from Noordt inspire each other and brew beautiful new beers specifically for Brand hospitality establishments. To maintain this innovative identity, a microbrewery will be installed in Wijlre starting in early 2023, enabling Brand to constantly brew new beers and bring back gems from the past, such as Imperator.
